USPS logo 100x100 Tests find U.S. Post Office branch is free from asbestos, clear to re openA U.S. Post Office branch in Santa Monica, Calif., got the green light to re-open yesterday after being shuttered on Friday for suspected asbestos contamination. Further tests by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor allayed fears, revealing no asbestos in either surface or air samples.

Concerns were raised last week when ceiling tiles that were damaged by a water leak in October, which were being replaced, were suspected to contain asbestos. Work to replace the tiles, which is being done by the building’s landlord, was halted while the material could be tested for asbestos.

Asbestos exposure is linked to the development of mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer that most often affects the lining of the lungs or abdomen. There is no known cure for mesothelioma.

Building materials such as ceiling tiles, floor tiles and insulation were made with asbestos for years. When left undisturbed, the materials are generally not dangerous. However, when asbestos-containing products are broken or crushed – as in a renovation or repair project like the one at the Post Office, microscopic fibers can be released that can be inhaled or ingested.

U.S. Postal Service spokesman Richard Maher told the Santa Monica Mirror that his agency is working with the building landlord to “ensure code compliance,” and that he has been assured the building is safe for the Post Office employees and customers.

The facility closed Friday at 5 p.m. and two employees were temporarily reassigned while the asbestos testing took place. The asbestos contractor gave approval for the building to reopen late Tuesday and the Post Office resumed full service yesterday.
